You never know which one will work the best. However it is certainly a headache to keep your "presence" in both networks, and especially keep it up to date. We have a tool now -- http://www.atomkeep.com which helps many people to keep their peers and connections updated. It does not really matter which network to use, it is the matter to keep the up to date..

[...] Krishna De says LinkedIn is used by people in leadership roles in business and those people actively managing their career as it’s a little more discriminating in terms of connections. She considers her connections on LinkedIn network as people she would happily recommend and refer as she knows their work. She observed that Facebook is far more relaxed and is like a group of eclectic friends with perhaps business or social interests in common. She found people who are world wide experts are really happy to connect on Facebook which is exciting and seems to level the playing field. [...]

[...] Faceto.us is a new online free tool to help you customise and brand your Facebook ID - it’s the brain child of David Petherick and I came across it on David’s blog. And how did I meet David? Well he posted a really helpful comment on a recent article I wrote about LinkedIn and Facebook. Another great new network contact and new Facebook friend I’ve met through blogging! As an example, my Facebook ID has been shortened to www.faceto.us/krishna which is easy to remember and easy to understand when speaking it out loud to people. I highly recommend you go and register your shortened Facebook ID today with a branded Faceto.us URL and continue to build your personal brand online. [...]

Great blog, Krishna.

I agree that it's vital to give, add value and support those in your network, and it is also important to define one's purpose with networking.

Having said that, I've been surprised to find myself located by broadcasters in Facebook, rather than through LinkedIn or Ecademy which provide me with far greater search visibility, so although it is sensible to focus your time on the networks that have the best perceived value for you in your particular situation, it is also useful to have a broader footprint across different networks to give the ability to pick up on 'serendipitous' connections.

As a concrete example, I recently had my blog added to a 'Best Blogs' list with over 10,000 subscribers, through a connection seen via the excellent 'Blog Friends' Facebook App [ http://apps.facebook.com/blogfriends/ ], but actually made contact via twitter.com

Google's Open Social initiative should make it easier to have one's profile data available readily across multiple social and business networks, and this will make the choice of which to belong to more a choice of where to spend most time and share the most relevant information.

Facebook is clogged with useless junk. I don't want to be poked, slapped, bitten by a werewolf or share my personal information with God only knows who.
