Here’s an opportunity to be seen to co-brand yourself with Google if you are a designer.

You see the Google team are inviting people to submit ideas for the new Google Favicon

Entries are open to the 20 June 2008 and in summary the technical requirements are as follows:

  • Google Favicon resolution: 16 pixel x 16 pixel image
  • Favicon format: .png, .gif, or .ico
  • Google Favicon size: 5 KB
  • transparency: 32 bit alpha transparency

The Google team recognise that creating a favicon is not easy and offer the following guidance:

  • Make the shape and profile visible - they have found semi-transparent graphics, specifically 32-bit alpha transparency, work best
  • Incorporate some or all of the letters in “Google”
  • Use the primary colours that are used in the Google logo
  • Avoid being product specific as the Google Favicon should apply across the different Google products and devices (e.g., mobile, PC)
  • Don’t make the Google Favicon time or date specific and should have longevity.

Remember the closing date for submissions of your Google Favicon design is the 20 June 2008.

    Google needs to keep its favicon (really it’s brand) what it was. Messing with this is like giving 400 million searchers a sore thumb. We’ve created an animated favicon for our business and what we’ve learned is that a change in favicon almost HAS TO come along with major changes across the board. Google apparently isn’t making other changes, so where’s the value in diluting a powerful brand that people were already comfortable with?

    @Lief – many thanks for your thoughts. I hold a different point of view in that we need to ensure that we constantly review our marketing materials and visual identity to ensure that it remains onbrand.

    The Google team must have reviewed that their favicon was not in line with their logo hence the need for change and connecting with the design community to come up with ideas for what must be one of the toughest design challenges as a favicon is so small.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts and yes I agree favicons need to be consistent with your overall brand identity.

    I’ve only now got mine in place with the recent bog redesign which we are currently snagging.
