I recently had the opportunity to meet with Dearbhla Kelly a career counsellor working with teens and young adults and their parents.

We had the opportunity to talk about tips for building confident children and how what we as parents might be saying to them in the current economy could shape their views on future career success – you can see the interview in a forthcoming blog post.

As parents, we have a huge influence over our children’s career choice but as it’s challenging to predict the future of the world of work what guidance should we be giving our children.

I am not yet a parent of teens (my three are aged 8 and under though sometimes I think they think they are teens!) and yet I do know from my friends that those teenage years are challenging. Dearbhla was telling me that in conversations she has been having with parents, the future reintroduction of third level fees in Ireland many parents are wondering how to plan for their child’s future.

Dearbhla has joined forces with Horizon Speakers (disclosure – I know both Ian Lawlor and Ria Lawlor of Horizon Speakers) and they have developed an evening workshop for parents which will take place on 3 June 2009 at 7pm in the Science Gallery.

The agenda for the evening will cover:

  • Tools to help motivate, encourage and inspire your teenager, even if they are not that focused
  • Tips on how to help your teenager them discover their talent, strengths, passions and interests
  • Provide you with practical tips to help your child uncover a wining career plan
  • Share the steps you and your teenager can take to maximise their future employability prospects
  • Give guidance on how to financially plan ahead for your child’s education
  • Enable you as a parent to feel more informed, confident and equipped to manage this important stage of your role as a parent.

You can book your ticket – just €25 per person or €30 for couples to attend – book your place here.

SPECIAL INVITATION TO PARENTS WHO BLOG

Dearbhla Kelly and the event organiser Ria Lawlor have generously offered my Biz Growth Community 10 free guest passes for parents who are bloggers.

If you would like to attend leave your comments below. I will need your name, email address and blog URL to pass on to the event organisers.

The only request for the free ticket is that after the event if is that you write a blog post sharing insights, thoughts, feedback or tips for your readers so that together we can share information and practical tips to other parents who might be interested in helping children prosper especially teens who are making career decisions in the unsettled economy.

I do hope you will be interested in these free tickets.

What questions do you have about parenting of your teens in such uncertain times? Write your comments below and I will ask Dearbhla for her thoughts and we’ll do another video with her if you have questions you want answered.

Dear Krishna, I found this really interesting as I am starting to work with teens in transition year and developing workshops for parents and teens also. All the cuts seem to be hitting the most vulnerable and young people have so much to contend with in this world it really breaks my heart at times. Thanks for doing this Mari

I am a parent of a teen, a nearly teen, and two not teens anymore, although I must say I find the word teen more than a little problematic nowadays – is it just until 19, do we include young adults who are still students and living at home, where does it start, and where does it end? My research is on young people’s blogs, and I would be very interested in attending the workshop.

I am a blogger and a mom of two. Both my boys are on their teenage years and Yes, I would agree that dealing with them is challenging. I did a little adjustments with myself and the way I should handle and talk to them. I did not have a hard time with them since I am familiar with parenting teens, I blog about parenting tips and attended workshops. This workshop would surely help the mum’s in your area.

[...] So while it’s not for me (yet) I was interested in an upcoming event aimed at parents who are helping their teens make some career & study choices. Whatever about negotiating coats and bags in the morning and the longer term goals of reading and responsibility that one has with a six year old, helping a teenager with their choices for the future must be a minefield. So if you are facing into that period and living in or near Dublin, it might well be in your interested to check out the following post about an event to that effect from Irish Blogger, Krishna De. Hi Krishna
Are the tickets still available? Sounds really interesting and I had a look at Dearbhla Kelly’s back ground and was impressed.
I blog @ Mykidstime.ie Wexford and on http:\\ballygarrettartstudio.blogspot.com – which is my arts practice where I work with children & youths.
I’d be very intereted in tickets.
Personally I have a large network of parents who are always interested in good speakers on parenting.
    Regards
